Seems like no matter where you look anymore, slashdot, digg, the register, cnet, etc, you will come across stories about governments, or large organizations, pushing for data retention.

On the law enforcement side of things, you have the authorities trying to make ISP’s doing their job for them with unrealistic legislation that will force them to do long term data retention.

Case:

FBI wants records kept of Web sites visited

The FBI wants all ISP’s to keep a log of every website every one of their customers visits, for two years.

Now lets do a little math magic here.

The domain name “http://www.lordnova.com” is 23 bytes. A infinitesimal amount of data, lets just use that as

the average domain name length.

Now, we will have to assume here, but I imagine the log kept would look something like this.

As a new kindle 2 owner, it is pretty much a requirement for me to do a review about it.
kindle 2

Well, I’ve had my kindle for 7 days now, and a lot of people are asking how I like it.

It is a great, sturdy device. It does not feel fragile, is of high quality construction, is perfectly sized and designed
for one handed reading.

The UI takes a little getting used to. Especially that 5-way joystick. All in all, it’s easier to get used to than a new cell phone.

I have transferred some of my favorites to it from Project Gutenberg, and they display just as well as the books I purchased from the Kindle Store.

I use an awesome program, Calibre E-Book Manager to organize and convert my ebooks, so I haven’t had to use my @kindle.com address to convert anything yet. Though I did use the @free.kindle.com to test their conversion, which is just as good as Calibre, but unnecessary for me.

Now, there are only 2 problems I have come across so far.

The PDF support is abysmal. It shrinks image pdf’s down and makes them unreadable. Text PDF’s are not quite as bad.
This is not a big deal though, as their PDF support is “experimental”. Just a minor nagging point.

The other thing that I have a problem with, is the cell modem connection. Again, this isn’t really a problem for most people, and I am sure that it works great in the larger states. But I live in Montana, and even Verizon’s 3G is a joke here.

Other than that, I have no problem with it.

Now, some people have asked me why I didn’t get a kindle DX, or a Nook, or some other ebook reader.
I didn’t get a kindle DX because I don’t want to read novels on something so large. It would be great for text books, and would probably be handy for me considering I am in college. But, I do not want to risk having my only real access to my textbooks die in the middle of the semester.

I didn’t get a Nook for a couple reasons. First of all, I can’t stand the name. I am also highly impatient. At the time I was able to order my ebook reader, the estimated ship date for a Nook was around Feb. 11th.
The last reason was this article Learn from my misery: Don’t buy a nook.
I do not like doing business with companies that treat their paying customers like that if I have any choice.

And don’t get me started on that ridiculously over sized iPhone named the iPad.
(Not an Apple fan by any definition of the word.)

On a side note, I just heard that Amazon has announced a Kindle SDK, which they are calling the KDK Kindle Developer Kit I have submitted my email address, and can not wait to get my hands on it.

Update: A few friends have asked be about the battery life, well after thorough testing, it has great battery life. With the 3g modem turned off, and only using it to read books, I read on average 3 hours a day, and it lasted 2 weeks before it got down to about 20% battery life.
With the 3g modem turned on, and using it to get on the net, the battery life drops to about 2-3 days.
